Product description
A simplified book-page preview for checking your description. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon; the real page differs. Long descriptions are cut off behind "Read more", so make your opening lines count.
KDP rules check
Based on KDP's description rules. These are warnings to help you: you decide what to change.
Paste this into the Description box on KDP. It uses only the HTML tags KDP accepts.
For stores and forms that don't accept HTML.
Blurb structure guide
Fiction
- Hook: one bold line that makes the reader stop.

- Stakes: what goes wrong and what they could lose.
- Close: a question or line that makes them want to read on.

- What you'll learn: 3–6 short points.
- Who it's for, and why you're the right author.
How to Format Your Amazon Book Description in 4 Steps
- Start with your text or a template. Paste your description from Word or Google Docs, or click Templates and pick a genre outline. Replace the [bracketed] parts with your own words.
- Format it. Use bold, italics, headings, bullet or numbered lists, and the symbols row (✓ ★ ◆ ① ② ③) to make the description easy to scan.
- Fix anything the KDP rules check flags. It warns about links, emails, phone numbers, review quotes, prices, emojis and the 4,000-character limit before KDP does.
- Copy the KDP HTML and paste it into the Description box on your KDP Details page. Check the result in KDP’s preview before you publish.
Your drafts are saved only in your own browser, so you can come back to them later. Nothing you type is sent to our server.
What HTML Does Amazon KDP Allow in Book Descriptions?
KDP lets you add a small set of HTML tags to your book description. The limit is 4,000 characters, and the HTML tags count towards it. Anything outside the allowed list may be removed or cause an error, so this formatter only produces tags KDP accepts. The rules come from KDP’s book description guidelines.
Tags KDP accepts
- Paragraphs and line breaks: <p> and <br>
- Text style: <b>, <i>, <em> and <u>
- Headings: <h4>, <h5> and <h6> only
- Lists: <ul>, <ol> and <li>
H1, H2 and H3 headings aren’t supported. If you paste text with large headings, the formatter turns them into H4.
What KDP doesn’t allow
- Website links, email addresses and phone numbers
- Reviews, quotes or testimonials, and requests for reviews
- Time-sensitive information, prices, availability or offers
- Emojis and lists of keywords
- Empty or doubled angle brackets (<>, << or >>), which show up as “invisible character” errors
Can You Use Symbols and Emojis in a KDP Description?
KDP doesn’t allow emojis in book descriptions. Plain text symbols are different: characters like ✓ ★ ◆ → ™ © and ① ② ③ are ordinary typographic characters, and they’re a neat way to mark benefits, steps or features.
The formatter flags real emojis such as 😀 or ❤️ and lets text symbols through. A few symbols, like ♥ and ⚠, can appear as colour emoji on some phones, so the tool shows a note when you use them. Use symbols sparingly, one per line at most, and don’t use a row of stars, which reads as a rating.
How to Write a Book Description That Sells
Readers decide from the first few lines, because Amazon shows only the opening of your description before the “Read more” link. Put your strongest line first.
Fiction
- Hook: one bold line that grabs attention.
- Setup: who the main character is and what they want.
- Stakes: what goes wrong and what they could lose.
- Close: a question or line that makes readers want more.
Non-fiction
- Promise: the change your reader wants.
- Problem: show you understand their struggle.
- Benefits: a short list of what they’ll learn or be able to do.
- Who it’s for, then a clear closing line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. There’s no sign-up and no email required, and there’s no limit on how many descriptions you format.
Your drafts are saved only in your own browser, so they’re still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is sent to our server. A cover image you add for the preview stays on your device and isn’t saved. Use Export to keep a backup file or to move your drafts to another browser.
4,000 characters, and the HTML tags count towards that total. The counter under the editor shows the length of the HTML you’ll paste into KDP, not just the visible text.
Common causes are empty angle brackets (<>), doubled brackets (<< or >>), and hidden characters copied from Word or Google Docs, such as zero-width spaces and soft hyphens. The formatter removes hidden characters when you paste, and the KDP rules check flags bracket problems.
No. KDP supports only H4, H5 and H6 headings in descriptions. The formatter’s Heading and Subhead buttons use H4 and H5, and larger headings in pasted text are converted to H4 automatically.
No. Ebookifi is an independent eBook conversion service. The preview is a simplified book page to help you check your description, and the real Amazon page may look slightly different. Always check your description in KDP’s own preview before you publish.
