Print-ready interior files, not just a re-exported ebook
KDP Print Paperback Formatting Services — Print-Ready Interior Files That Pass KDP's Review First Time
Print formatting is not the same job as ebook conversion. A paperback interior needs a fixed trim size, correct margins for binding, bleed for any full-page images, and page numbers that actually mean something. Our KDP Print Paperback service is dedicated book interior formatting, built specifically to KDP's paperback specification — not a Kindle file exported and hoped for the best.

What Every Print Formatting Order Includes
This service covers interior formatting only. Need a cover designed too? See our Cover Design service. Publishing through IngramSpark instead of KDP? That's a separate service with its own preflight requirements.
Isn't My eBook File Already Print-Ready?
No — and this is the single most common misunderstanding authors have when they move from ebook to print. Your Kindle or ePub file is reflowable — the text reshapes itself to fit whatever screen and font size the reader has chosen. A print book is the opposite: every page is fixed, forever, at the exact dimensions of your chosen trim size.
That difference creates real, specific problems if you simply export your ebook file to PDF and upload it:
- ✗ Margins sized for a screen, not a bound book — text disappears into the spine
- ✗ No bleed set up, so full-page images print with an unwanted white border
- ✗ No real page numbers — ebooks don't need them, but a print book's table of contents is meaningless without them
- ✗ Running headers and footers that were deliberately removed for the ebook version are now missing where a reader expects them
- ✗ Chapter breaks that worked fine on a screen create awkward blank or half-empty pages in print
- ✗ Stray single words or lines left stranded at the top or bottom of a page
None of this means your ebook file was done badly — it means print and digital are genuinely different formats with different rules. We format your interior specifically for print, from your original manuscript, rather than repurposing a file built for a screen.
Word Documents and Template Software Weren't Built for This
If you're starting from scratch rather than converting an existing ebook file, the usual starting points create their own problems:
Word Is a Word Processor, Not a Typesetting Engine
Books formatted directly in Word often show awkward hyphenation and uneven "rivers" of white space between words — small things individually, but the cumulative effect reads as instantly self-published.
Template Software Gives Every Book the Same Look
Tools like Vellum and Atticus offer a fixed set of interior templates — a dark thriller and a sweet romance can end up with the exact same chapter heading style, regardless of what actually suits the book.
KDP's Margin and Gutter Checks Are Strict
The inside gutter margin has to scale with your exact page count — KDP's minimum runs from 0.375" for books up to 150 pages to 0.625" at 301–500 pages, and wider beyond that. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons a print file gets sent back.
None of this is a failure on your part — it's what happens when general-purpose tools are asked to do a specialist's job.
Typography Matched to Your Book — Not a Cookie-Cutter Template
We don't pick from a fixed set of interior designs and apply whichever one is closest. Chapter headers, drop caps, and interior typography are chosen to fit your specific book — its genre, its tone, and its cover — the layout quality readers associate with traditionally published books, not a generic default.
Choosing the Right Trim Size
| Trim Size | Best For |
|---|---|
| 5" × 8" | Novels, novellas, and poetry — a compact trade size |
| 5.06" × 7.81" | European B-format — UK/EU fiction |
| 5.25" × 8" | Fiction, memoirs, essays |
| 5.5" × 8.5" | Fiction and memoir — common trade paperback size |
| 6" × 9" | Most popular overall — non-fiction, business, fiction |
| 6.14" × 9.21" | Academic and professional titles |
| 6.69" × 9.61" | Textbooks, reference, illustrated non-fiction |
| 7" × 10" | Textbooks, manuals, technical guides |
| 7.44" × 9.69" | Large trade, professional titles |
| 7.5" × 9.25" | Cookbooks, illustrated non-fiction |
| 8" × 10" | Children's books, art books, activity books |
| 8.25" × 8.25" | Square format — picture books, photo books |
| 8.5" × 8.5" | Square format — coloring books, art books |
| 8.5" × 11" | Workbooks, journals, planners, coloring books |
These are the most popular choices — KDP offers more, including A5 and landscape formats, all listed in its Paperback Submission Guidelines. Not sure which trim size fits your book? Tell us your genre and approximate page count in your order notes, and we'll confirm the right choice before we start — or ask us first if you'd like to decide before ordering.
The KDP Paperback Preflight Checklist
- ✓ Trim size matches exactly what you selected at checkout
- ✓ Margins meet KDP's minimum requirements for your page count
- ✓ Gutter width correctly scaled to your exact page count
- ✓ Bleed correctly extended on every full-page image
- ✓ All fonts embedded in the final PDF
- ✓ Page numbering sequence correct — front matter handled separately from the main body
- ✓ Page numbers and running headers consistent throughout
- ✓ No widows or orphans left uncorrected
- ✓ Image resolution checked for print-quality output, not just screen quality
- ✓ Chapter openings and blank pages planned deliberately — KDP rounds an odd page count up with a blank page at the end, and rejects files with excessive blank pages
This is one part of our full quality process — see our Quality Standards page for the complete six-stage check every file goes through.
Matching Print and eBook Editions
Publishing Print and Kindle Together
If you're publishing a paperback alongside a Kindle edition, the same manuscript feeds both — but each needs its own formatting pass. See our Kindle Conversion service, or ask about our Full Digital Package covering Kindle, ePub, and print interior in one project.
Illustrated and Photo-Heavy Books
Cookbooks, photography books, and heavily illustrated non-fiction need careful bleed and image resolution handling that a standard text layout doesn't require. Tell us about your image content in your order notes and we'll confirm the right approach before starting.
How KDP Print Formatting Works
Order → Upload → Format → Receive. The same simple process for every service — full detail, including exactly how we handle special requests and revisions, is on our How It Works page.

KDP Print Paperback — Frequently Asked Questions
All of KDP's standard trim sizes, including 5" × 8", 5.5" × 8.5", 6" × 9", and 8.5" × 11". See the trim size guide above for guidance on which fits your genre. Not sure? Tell us in your order notes and we'll confirm before starting.
KDP requires at least 24 pages. The maximum depends on your trim size, ink, and paper — up to 828 pages for most black-and-white trim sizes, and fewer for color. If your page count is odd, KDP rounds it up to an even number with a blank page at the end, so we plan your layout to finish cleanly. Full limits are in KDP's Paperback Submission Guidelines.
As closely as the formats allow. Print and ebook are fundamentally different — print has fixed pages, ebooks reflow — but chapter breaks, headings, and overall design stay consistent between editions when we format both from the same manuscript.
Yes. Any image intended to print to the edge of the page is set up with correct bleed as standard — no extra charge, no separate request needed.
Both. Tell us in your order notes whether your interior needs color pages, and we'll confirm pricing if it affects the project — most standard fiction and non-fiction text formatting is unaffected either way.
We deliver a print-ready PDF; ordering a physical proof copy is done directly through KDP after you upload our file — KDP prints and ships a proof copy to you before your book goes live. We're glad to walk you through that step if it's your first time.
No — this service is interior formatting only. Cover design, including the front, spine, and back wrap for print, is a separate service — see our Cover Design service.
Yes. A KDP hardcover needs its own interior file rather than a copy of your paperback PDF: hardcovers come in fewer trim sizes (5.5" × 8.5", 6" × 9", 6.14" × 9.21", 7" × 10", and 8.25" × 11") and need between 75 and 550 pages, so a short paperback may not qualify. Hardcover interior formatting is priced separately, from $45 — see our Pricing page, or use our custom quote form to order both editions together.
Yes, but as a separate service with its own preflight requirements — IngramSpark and KDP have different technical specifications even for the same trim size. See our Pricing page for IngramSpark Interior PDF formatting, or contact us to discuss dual distribution.
$40 for manuscripts up to 100 pages, $60 for 101–200 pages, $80 for 201–300 pages, $100 for 301–400 pages, and $120 for 401–500 pages. Every price includes trim size setup, gutter margins, bleed, front matter, complete source files, one revision pass, and the lifetime warranty. Over 500 pages, or if your book contains complex elements or layouts such as tables, equations, heavy image placement, or multi-column pages, please use our custom quote form instead. See the pricing table above.
