How Amazon KDP Royalties Work
The 35% Royalty Tier
Applies to books priced below $2.99 or above $12.99, to sales in countries outside the 70% territories, to sales in Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and India unless the book is enrolled in KDP Select, and to books made up mainly of public-domain content. Kindle Unlimited reads are paid separately, per page read, from the KDP Select Global Fund.
Your royalty is simply 35% of your list price. No delivery cost is deducted. The minimum list price depends on file size: $0.99 under 3MB, $1.99 from 3MB to under 10MB, and $2.99 at 10MB or more.
The 70% Royalty Tier
Available for books priced between $2.99 and $12.99 on Amazon.com (the band rose from $9.99 on 7 July 2026 — see KDP’s eBook List Price Requirements), for sales in the 70% territories. It sounds straightforward — but Amazon deducts a delivery cost before calculating your royalty.
On Amazon.com the delivery cost is $0.15 per megabyte of your book’s file size as Amazon measures it, rounded up to the nearest kilobyte, with a minimum of $0.01 (KDP Pricing Page). The formula is: Your royalty = 70% × (Price − Delivery Cost), with any VAT removed from the price first.
Delivery Cost and File Size
A typical hand-coded Kindle file from a 250-page text-only book runs 0.5MB to 1MB — a delivery cost of $0.08 to $0.15. An automated conversion of the same book may run 3MB to 5MB — a delivery cost of $0.45 to $0.75.
This is one reason hand-coded Kindle files earn more per sale than automated conversions of the same book at the same price. A hand-coded Kindle file typically runs 0.5–1.5MB for a text-only book. A file with many images may run 3–8MB.
Setting the Right Price for Your Kindle Book
The most common pricing question is where to sit inside the 70% band, which now runs from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com.
For a typical text-only book of 0.5–1MB, the royalty is about $1.99–$2.04 at $2.99, $6.89–$6.94 at $9.99, and $8.99–$9.04 at $12.99. Priced at $13.99, the same book drops to the 35% option and earns about $4.90.
A lower price earns less per copy, so it only pays off if it sells enough extra copies to make up the difference. Use the calculator above to compare price points before you decide.

The delivery cost uses the file size you enter. If you don’t know it yet, the “Estimate from page count” option assumes about 0.003MB per page for a text-only book. Books with many images are larger, so their delivery cost will be higher — once you upload to KDP, use the exact file size shown on the Pricing page.
The delivery cost deduction reduces the effective royalty rate below 70%. On a $2.99 book with a 1MB file, the delivery cost is $0.15, so your royalty is 70% × ($2.99 − $0.15) = $1.99. On the 35% option the same book earns $1.05. The 70% option still earns more — but the margin is smaller than authors often expect.
