Why Your Cover Matters More Than Your Blurb
On Amazon, Apple Books, and Kobo, your cover is usually the first — and often the only — thing a shopper sees before scrolling on. It appears as a thumbnail roughly the size of a postage stamp in search results, in “Customers also bought,” and in ads. A cover that works at that size earns the click; everything else on your book page only matters after it.
A professional cover does three jobs in that half-second: it tells the reader what genre the book is, it looks as polished as the traditionally published books beside it, and its title is readable without zooming in.
What shoppers judge in half a second
- ✓ Genre: does it look like the books I read?
- ✓ Quality: does it look traditionally published?
- ✓ Legibility: can I read the title as a thumbnail?
- ✓ Mood: does it match the story or promise inside?
DIY Cover Tools vs. a Professional Cover Designer
Template Tools Make Look-Alike Covers
Free template tools are popular — which is exactly the problem. Thousands of books share the same layouts and fonts, and readers notice.
Wrong Sizes Get Flagged or Blurred
Covers exported at the wrong dimensions are stretched, letterboxed, or flagged. KDP warns if your cover is under 2,560px tall and does not display covers under 500px on the shortest side.
Print Covers Are Unforgiving
A paperback wrap needs the exact spine width for your page count plus bleed on every edge. Get it wrong and KDP sends the file back.
None of this means you cannot design your own cover. It means a professional cover pays for itself in clicks.

What We Need From You
- ✓ Your book title and subtitle, exactly as they will appear on the store
- ✓ Your author name — plus series name and number, if any
- ✓ Your genre and a two- or three-sentence description of the book
- ✓ 2–3 covers you like in your genre, and anything you want to avoid
- ✓ Any photo or artwork you want used — only images you have the right to use on a book cover
- ✓ For a paperback (Standard or Elite): your trim size and final page count, because the spine width depends on it
