Some services take a shortcut: they capture each page as a flat image — a screenshot, essentially — and wrap it in an EPUB file. It can look identical to real fixed layout at a glance. It isn't the same book.
When text is trapped inside an image, a reader cannot search for a word, highlight a passage, or look something up in their device's built-in dictionary. Screen readers cannot read it at all — the text simply isn't there, only a picture of it. And because images are far larger than text, the file size balloons, which on Kindle specifically means a higher delivery fee eating into your royalty on every sale.

A 20-spread book is a standard-length picture book — roughly 40 physical pages once printed. Each spread is its own precisely positioned canvas of text and images, built individually by hand. Requires a specific "pre-paginated" property set correctly in the book's internal metadata. Miss this one setting and Apple's system won't treat your book as fixed layout at all — it'll try to reflow it, breaking your design entirely.
Google Play Books
Enforces a maximum image dimension of 3,200 pixels for width and height. Illustrations exceeding this can fail to process correctly. We optimize every image to fit within this limit before it becomes a problem.
