If your book's art and text are tightly integrated — words placed on top of illustrations, layout that only works one specific way — fixed layout keeps that design locked exactly as you made it, on every device.

Early Readers Often Do Better Reflowable
Chapter books and early readers with occasional illustrations usually work well as standard reflowable text — and unlike fixed layout, reflowable fully supports read-aloud, dictionary lookups, and adjustable text size, which matters a great deal for kids learning to read.

Choosing the Right Amazon Category for Your Children's Book
Amazon allows up to two categories per book. If you choose an age-range category — Baby to Age 2, Ages 3–5, Ages 6–8, or Ages 9–12 — that uses one of your two slots, so it's worth thinking through deliberately rather than defaulting to it automatically.
Separately, Amazon also has optional Reading Age and Grade Range metadata fields specifically for children's and YA books — these don't use up a category slot and genuinely help parents, teachers, and Amazon's own search surface your book to the right readers. We set these correctly as part of every order.
