Every major eBook platform has different cover image requirements. Use the wrong dimensions and your cover displays with black bars, distorted proportions, or a blurry resolution on certain devices. This guide gives you the exact specs for every platform in one place.

All platforms require RGB colour space. Amazon KDP recommends 2,560 × 1,600px for best display on high-resolution Kindle screens and the Kindle app on iPad. IngramSpark distributes to a wide range of retailers — their dimensions are a safe minimum for all distribution partners.
The Universal Cover Size That Works for Every Platform
You do not need a different cover file for every platform.
A single cover image at 2,560 × 1,600px at 300 DPI in RGB JPEG format meets the requirements of Amazon KDP, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes and Noble, IngramSpark, and Draft2Digital simultaneously.
Apple Books is the exception
It uses a portrait ratio (taller than wide) rather than the landscape ratio used by most other platforms. If you are publishing on Apple Books alongside Amazon, you need either a separate Apple Books cover designed at 2,800 × 3,746px, or a cover designed at a square ratio that works acceptably on both. Most independent authors use the Amazon KDP dimensions as their default and create an Apple Books-specific version for Apple Books distribution.

Not directly. Print covers require CMYK colour space, specific bleed dimensions, and a spine and back cover. eBook covers are the front cover only in RGB. Your designer can export two versions from the same source file — one for print, one for eBook.
Amazon compresses cover images for display in search results. A cover that looks sharp at full size may appear slightly soft in thumbnails — this is normal. If it looks noticeably blurry, your source file may be below the recommended 2,560 × 1,600px dimensions.
Cover size does not directly affect search ranking. However, a professional-looking cover at the correct dimensions affects click-through rate from search results — which indirectly affects sales velocity, which does affect Amazon’s internal ranking algorithm.
Adobe Photoshop and Canva are the most common tools. Canva has free Kindle cover templates at the correct dimensions — search “Kindle book cover” in Canva’s template library. Ensure your final export is at 300 DPI.
